The Lover's Twisted Tale: Rene Magritte

Art has been a part of the human experience for thousands of years. An artist creates for many reasons but there is always a meaning for it. That meaning varies upon the individual viewing it. I had the chance to view a very interesting painting by Rene Magritte entitled The Lovers. At first I thought it was strange but then after studying it for a time the painting became more fascinating. The bold colors, hidden faces and position of the elements in the painting .This picture filled of mystery. But what was he trying to say? That love is blind? Either way, its beautiful! Don't you think so?

René Magritte described his paintings by saying,
"My painting is visible images which conceal nothing; they evoke mystery and, indeed, when one sees one of my pictures, one asks oneself this simple question, 'What does that mean?'. It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable."

Elements

At first sight we can see this two mysterious couple, just about to kiss, but with the singularity that they are cover in with a white fabric. The title of the painting implies that the two people depicted are lovers. When viewing the painting the first thing that interested  me was the colors. They are all solid and bold colors. The walls are a very specific color.  The elements that make up this painting are the room and the lovers. The way the room is painted makes it seem almost insignificant. There are no windows! However it is unusual to see a room with such a variety of colored walls. The lovers are the main object and the one that adds the most mystery and intrigue. The man is in a dominant position with his shoulders angled the woman is leaning backwards.Wat about walls : The color blue is associated with calm or water which is associated with life. The color red is associated with anger and love while white is associated with purity. Black is commonly associated with death which the man may be representative of. The woman is dressed in red which may mean love or passion. The veils are  grayish color and depending upon how you see it could mean purity. Trying to put all of these elements together to form a single meaning is rather difficult.

I chose this Magritte’s painting because I personally think that the real meaning is that the picture show us how lovers are: they are blind for what they feel, the lovers don’t take a moment to think, they are impulsive, they just let themselves go with the feelings. For that reason The Lovers of Magritte represent the mystery that veils our understanding of a lover.
